I’m a writer, not an actor, but my wife Sararose and I have been taking improv classes at Peninsula College in Port Angeles. Initially, we were doing it to enliven our aging minds and do something fun together. But the more I got into it, I realized how it helps me as a writer.

  • One of the biggest challenges writers face is self-doubt. Improv is teaching me to trust my instincts and embrace mistakes as part of the process.

  • Improv exercises often jumpstart my creativity by forcing me to think quickly and stay present.

  • It helps me enhance dialogue and voice. Good dialogue feels natural and dynamic. Improv helps me create believable conversations

  • Write more engaging descriptions. Descriptive writing can sometimes become dull or overly detailed. Improv encourages vivid, immediate responses that capture the essence of a moment.

So, there you are. Improv techniques offer practical tools to overcome common writing challenges, but even if it didn’t, it’s a lot of fun.
