I’m a writer, not an actor, but my wife Sararose and I have been taking improv classes at Peninsula College in Port Angeles. Initially, we were doing it to enliven our aging minds and do something fun together. But the more I got into it, I realized how it helps me as a writer.

One of the biggest challenges writers face is self-doubt. Improv is teaching me to trust my instincts and embrace mistakes as part of the process.
Improv exercises often jumpstart my creativity by forcing me to think quickly and stay present.
It helps me enhance dialogue and voice. Good dialogue feels natural and dynamic. Improv helps me create believable conversations
Write more engaging descriptions. Descriptive writing can sometimes become dull or overly detailed. Improv encourages vivid, immediate responses that capture the essence of a moment.
So, there you are. Improv techniques offer practical tools to overcome common writing challenges, but even if it didn’t, it’s a lot of fun.
